Bauhaus Imaginista

Featuring the latest research commissioned on the occasion of the Bauhaus centenary, this book explores the global influence of the renowned Bauhaus school of arts and its famed artists. Bauhaus Imaginista marks the centennial anniversary of this fascinating and popular school of art, which championed the idea of artists working together as a community. The Bauhaus reconnected art with everyday life and was active in the fields of architecture, performance, design, and visual art. Founded by Walter Gropius, its faculty included such luminaries as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, La´szlo´ Moholy-Nagy, and Josef Albers. Placing emphasis on the international dissemination and reception of the Bauhaus, this book expresses the Bauhaus’ influence, philosophy, and history beyond Germany. Rethinking the school from an international perspective, it sets its entanglements against a century of geopolitical change, as many of its artists fled World War II Germany.

Original Bauhaus

The Bauhaus existed for only 14 years in Germany, but for the past 100 years its ideas have been passed on and its products relaunched, imitated and further developed. Using 14 famous, familiar, or forgotten objects, this book offers 14 case studies. It examines questions such as how did the woman sitting on the tubular-steel chair become the most famous anonymous figure from the Bauhaus; whether the Haus am Horn in Weimar has a secret twin; and why the tea infusers by Marianne Brandt which were created as prototypes for industrial production always remained one-of-a-kind pieces. This book presents art and design from the Bauhaus-Archiv's collection, along with exceptional loans from international collections. It sheds light on how unique work and series, remake and original are inseparably linked in the history of the Bauhaus. This is because Bauhaus artists did not see art and technology as opposed to each other. Instead, they used technical innovations to create exceptional works of art, and they took serial production into account from the moment they began drafting their designs. Reproductions, re-editions and remakes have made the Bauhaus the 20th century's most influential school of architecture, design, and art, and this book offers a new take on the Bauhaus legacy.

Whitford Frank Bauhaus. World of Art

The Bauhaus, a school of art and design founded in Germany in 1919, informed the aesthetic of much of our contemporary environment, influencing everything from housing developments to furniture and websites. The Bauhaus was only in operation for fourteen years before being shut down by the Nazis in 1933, but the school left a lasting mark on design and the practice of art education throughout the world. In Bauhaus, Frank Whitford traces the ideas behind the school’s conception, describes its teaching methods, examines the daily lives of the students, and details the activities of the teachers, which included Paul Klee, Josef Albers, and Wassily Kandinsky. Reissued to mark the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus, this is an accessible and vibrantly illustrated introduction to perhaps the most significant design school of the last century.

Bauhaus Dessau Architecture

It was with this slogan that the Bauhaus—the German art school famous for combining crafts and the fine arts—moved to Dessau in 1925. The school's seven years in this industrial city between the Elbe and Mulde Rivers were particularly productive for its designers and architects, who created a unique ensemble of modern architecture that attracts visitors from all over the world to Dessau to this day. Many of the Bauhaus buildings in Dessau are now regarded as key works of European Modernism and some have even become UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They express the revolutionary aim of the historical Bauhaus to bring about fundamental change in society through design and architecture. Exclusively published in co-operation with the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and to coincide with the Bauhaus centenary in 2019, this brilliantly illustrated volume presents the Bauhaus buildings in Dessau in words and pictures and offers new perspectives on these icons of modern architecture.

For one, an indigenous English proto-modern movement predated ‘first contact’ with the Bauhaus (alongside the living dead, Powers invokes anthropology, tribalism and the clash of civilisations, with a mix of irony and affection, particularly for the ideological battles, purity tests and thought police that he sees ‘patrolling Modernism’s border’) with the result that, once contact was made, a significant exchange of ideas occurred between émigrés and hosts, transforming both in the process.

Gossel Peter, Droste Magdalena Bauhaus

In a fleeting fourteen year period, sandwiched between two world wars, Germany's Bauhaus school of art and design changed the face of modernity. With utopian ideals for the future, the school developed a pioneering fusion of fine art, craftsmanship, and technology to be applied across painting, sculpture, design, architecture, film, photography, textiles, ceramics, theatre, and installation. As much an intense personal community as a publicly minded collective, the Bauhaus was first founded by Walter Gropius (1883-1969), and counted Josef and Anni Albers, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, Gunta Stoelzl, Marianne Brandt and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe among its members. Between its three successive locations in Weimar, Dessau and Berlin, the school fostered charismatic and creative exchange between teachers and students, all varied in their artistic styles and preferences, but united in their idealism and their interest in a "total" work of art across different practices and media. This book celebrates the adventurous innovation of the Bauhaus movement, both as a trailblazer in the development of modernism, and as a paradigm of art education, where an all-encompassing freedom of creative expression and cutting-edge ideas led to functional and beautiful creations.
